Why You Really Need to Lift Heavy

by | Apr 15, 2021 | Exercise | 0 comments

Weight training is often seen as an overtly macho way to workout, but heavy weights can help in many ways. I’ve put together a list of the reasons why you need to start lifting heavy, so let’s not hang about.

Increase Your Strength – if you’re looking to get stronger there’s no better way than weight training. The great thing is that your muscles get stronger, but you don’t get bigger. This is an excellent method for women. Added strength raises stamina and makes simple things easier, and you look stronger too.

Boost Your Confidence – there’s a lot of satisfaction in knowing you’re getting stronger, and heavy weight training has been proven not only to boost confidence but to help with anxiety, stress and depression. It’s all about feeling good physically and mentally.

Lose That Fat – have you been lax with your workouts lately? It’s easy to gain fat when you’re not up to much so get the heavy weights out and start lifting. Heavy weight training has been shown to help burn calories not only while you’re training, but for a good while afterwards too. It’s a reaction by your body to the heavy lifting session, so you can lose fat and gain muscle even when you’re not in the gym.

Become More Resilient – did you know that stronger muscles mean you’re less susceptible to injury? It makes sense when you think about it: the stronger something it is, the more resilient to damage it becomes. But it’s not just the muscles your strength training builds, it’s the bones and joints too. As these are the more fragile parts in the body it’s always good to give them a bit of a boost and guard against potential injury.

Feed Your Brain – exercise of any kind is good for the brain, but a heavy lifting workout has been found to trigger the production of a hormone known as IGF-1. This important hormone enhances the cognitive functions and improves brain performance, so if you work with heavy weights, you’ll have much better brain function. A stronger mind is always going to help you feel great.

Keep Going for Longer – heavy weight lifting builds the muscles and improves endurance, so you can keep up with your daily routine without tiring too soon. Greater endurance is a welcome boost in these days of busy lives and demanding jobs, and all of this adds to your general well-being.

Beat Ageing – we’re all getting older, but a good heavy lifting workout is a great way to battle those signs of ageing. As we’ve seen, this sort of workout builds bone and muscle strength so protects against conditions such as osteoporosis that come about as we get older. This is especially true for women.

The above are just some of the ways in which a heavy lifting workout can benefit you, so have a closer look at how you can get into heavy weight lifting and start putting the time in now.
